Inaugural Past presidents Luncheon Tattersalls Club 18th October 1991

About this Website

This is the Web site of the Past Presidents of Queensland for the Association of Financial Advisers.

During its history, the Association has been known variously as the Life Underwriters Association (LUA), the Australian Lifewriters Association (ALA) and currently, the Association of Financial Advisers (AFA).

The Past Presidents represented here have served under all of these names. Almost all served the Association for many years on the State Boards, the National Board as well as on numerous committees and a few became National President.

The LUA was first formed in 1946 in Queensland, and grew into a National Association.  Later it was reorganised in to a series of State Incorporated bodies with a National Association over siting the individual state bodies.  In 1994 because of a changing national political landscape it was decided that the Association should reform into one National Body.  As a result, the state bodies ceased to exist and the role of State President changed to one of State Director on the National Board.

Many of these Presidents/Directors were responsible for many initiatives some of which are still part of the financial world today.

Many people would not know but in 1981, A National Committee chaired by Dudley Dick successfully lobbied for the introduction of a tax deduction for superannuation for the self employed, an achievement that has benefited millions of Australians for over 30 years.

Queensland Directors ran the first State Conference for members in 1970, and the first National Conference in 1976, when Paul Brannelly and Brian Jones brought Philip Gram and Ben Feldman, both MDRT greats, to Australia.

The first ever Branch structure was set up in Queensland. Queensland also set up the first Life Insurance Advisory Bureau under Joe Nowak’s stewardship to assist consumers.

The Nation House in Canberra was established under Frank Daly.

Darryl Seccombe brought the Make A Wish Foundation to Australia where it was adopted as the National Charity of the Association. Darryl remains as the Queensland Trustee of the AFA Investment Fund.

The late Frank Daly and Ian Donaldson successfully lobbied the ATO over the treatment of ongoing income streams as an asset, something that is now taken a a given.

Members of this elite group meet annually for a luncheon as they have done continuously for over 20 years. The first meeting was held on 18th October 1991.

Members of this group have over 100 years of collective service to the Association.  Most are now retired from an industry that they collectively loved and many continue to contribute to the industry.
